BREWER – Roger Doane Smith Sr. passed away March 22, 2008, at his home on Brimmer Street, Brewer, surrounded by his loving family, who celebrated his long and vital life. He was born Jan. 9, 1914, in Corinna, the son of Belmont and Harriet Bassett Smith. Roger graduated from Westminster Preparatory School, Simsbury, Conn., and attended Bowdoin College, Class of 1936, where he was a member of Alpha Delta Phi. After college he joined Merrill Trust Co. In 1942 he joined his brother’s accounting firm, Paul A. Smith and Co. After the unexpected death of his brother in 1944, he formed his own firm and did accounting and auditing until his retirement. Roger formed Rockwood Farm Stable in the late 1940s and raced many horses of note, such as Trotting Champion, Thunderation and Invitational Pacing Mare, Eric’s Joy. Rockwood Farm Stable continues as a United States Trotting Association registered stable. Roger joined with Alan Mollison and successfully operated the Bangor State Fair from 1961 to 1970. In 1972 Roger was appointed State Steward by the Maine Harness Racing Commission, a position he held until his retirement in 2005, at age 92. During his life, Roger served on several charitable boards, including Hope House. He was a Mayflower descendant, a member of the Maine Genealogical Society, Priscilla Mullins Alden Society, Masonic Bodies and Anah Shriners. He enjoyed gardening, Bridge, oysters and the Red Sox. Roger loved welcom-ing friends and family to his home providing lovely meals. He is survived by the love of his life for 28 years, his wife, Irma (Gould) Smith; his children, Roger Smith Jr. and his wife, Mindy, of Old Orchard Beach, Kristina Smith and fianc?, Dan, of Las Vegas, Karen Grock and husband, Don, of Reno, Nev., John Feeley and wife, Gaye, of Messina, N.Y., Carol and husband, Bill Jordan, of Portland, Tom and wife, Karen Morelli, of Brewer and James Morelli of Wilmington, Del. He was the best Bumpa to numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren from all over. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 28, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer, where a funeral service will be held 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 29, with the Rev. Clayton Blackstone officiating. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
