JONESPORT – Roger S. Beal, Sr. 86, went home to be with the Lord Monday, March 7, 2005, at the home of his daughter, surrounded by his loving family after a brief battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 1, 1919, in Jonesport, the son of John H. and Katie Lee (Beal) Beal. He attended Jonesport schools. As a youngster, Roger lived on Libby Island while his father, John Beal, was assistant keeper. He started his fishing career with his father in 1931 at the age of 12. He then went on to be the Captain of 11 sardine boats from Yarmouth, Maine to Jonesport. He captained a yacht in Florida for two winters. In 1968 he left to go lobster fishing and dragging on his own boats. He retired from fishing when he sold his boat, Beulah Jane III, in 1994. Roger enjoyed reminiscing with his family about the many tales of his life. He loved all the pranks and jokes his grandchildren played on him. He was a loving and caring father and grandfather and will be dearly missed. Roger is survived by his daughter, Mavis (Beal) Stubbs of Jonesport; and his grandchildren, Stanley Stubbs and his friend, Lori Therrien of Columbia Falls, Edward Stubbs and his wife, Mary, of Jonesboro, Nancy Durkee and her husband, Leonard, of Jonesport, Jeffery Stubbs and his wife, Melanie, of Ellsworth, Amy Thompson and her husband, Kenneth, of Addison; Lori Anne Beal and her husband Kevin, of Beals, Roger S. Beal III and his wife, Jannell, of Beals, and Susie Marshall and her husband, Clint, of Holden; granddaughter-in-law, Dawn Stubbs of Addison; his great- grandchildren, Kip, Jason, Justina, and Joshua Stubbs, Apryl Stubbs, Jason and Eric Falvey, Jennie, Whitney, and Karma Durkee, Branden and Brittany Stubbs, Katie and Kenneth Thompson, Blake and Blane Beal, Cameron and J-Lynn Beal, and Colby and Mackenzie Marshall; his great- great-grandson, Maximus Joy; two sisters, Dorothy Alley and her husband, John Sr., of Boothbay and Gloria Lemay and her husband, James, of Old Orchard; a sister-in-law, Nancy Beal of Beals; a special aunt, Elva Crowley of Jonesport; a special niece, Lanta Hachey of Old Town; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife of 64 years, Beulah J. Beal in 2000; a son, Roger S. Beal Jr. in 1973; a son-in-law, Kenneth Stubbs in 1992; two great-grandsons, Roger S. Beal IV in 2000 and Roger Dean Beal in 2004; two brothers, John Henry Beal in 1921 and Nolan Beale in 2002. Friends are invited to visit with the family 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Jonesport Wesleyan Church, where funeral services will be held Friday, March 11, with Pastor George Woodward officiating.
