FORT KENT – Rolande (Cyr) Jalbert, 80, one of Northern Maine’s most gracious and hospitable citizens, passed away April 19, 2008, at a Westbrook nursing home, after an extended Illness. She was born Jan. 31, 1928, the daughter of Alexis and Clotilde (Levesque) Cyr. Rolande grew up in Van Buren, tending the family gardens with her mother and fishing for salmon with her father. Having developed a profound love of the outdoors, it’s no wonder Rolande’s infatuation with Robert L. Jalbert, a legendary woodsmen, grew into a love affair that lasted 28 years, until a plane crash took her beloved husband in 1980. Rolande enjoyed fishing, hunting and canoeing with her husband, children, relatives and friends at the family’s sporting camps along the Allagash River. She will be especially remembered for her strength, dignity and warmth that, like the sun, bathed guests upon arrival at her home or cottage. Whether two or 50 people, friends and relatives were greeted by the savory aromas of Rolande’s favorite dishes and the charm of her effortless grace. Each gathering was a celebration, a feast of love that flowed like a river from Rolande’s heart. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School, Van Buren and Husson College, Bangor. For most of her professional career, Rolande worked as a paralegal for her husband. In her free time, she tended her gardens, played golf, volunteered in several local organizations and traveled throughout Europe and Africa. Rolande will be missed for her devotion to her children and grandchildren, as well as for her boundless generosity, infectious laughter and the joy she brought to every occasion. Rolande is survived by her son, Greg Jalbert and wife, Rosanne Jalbert, of Evergreen, Colo.; her daughter, Paula Jalbert and husband, Neil Cambridge, of Portland; one brother, Lionel Cyr and his wife, Doris Cyr, of Avon, Conn.; three grandchildren, Zack Jalbert of Denver, Micaela Jalbert of Yarmouth and Alaina Jalbert of Boulder, Colo. She was predeceased by her parents; and three sisters, Jacqueline Dunn, Priscilla Cyr and Theresa Cyr. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, and noon Thursday until time of services at Daigle & Nadeau Funeral Home, Fort Kent. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at St. Louis Catholic Church, Fort Kent. Spring burial will be May 9 at St. Louis Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Rolande’s memory may be made to Fort Kent Public Library, 1 Monument Square, Fort Kent, ME 04743. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
