VENICE, Fla. – Rosalind L. Spear, 61, of Venice, Fla., and Bangor, died Jan. 1, 2008, after a long, courageous fight against cancer. She was born Oct. 19, 1946, in Boston, the daughter of Harold and Gladys (Pearlstein) Laserson. Roz was a graduate of Newton (Mass.) High School, where she met her future husband, Edward. After marriage and kids arrived, they moved to Maine. She earned bachelor and master degrees from the University of Maine in elementary education and administration, respectively. In 2003, Roz retired from a long and fulfilling career in education having served in several area school districts as a teacher, principal and administrator. She always enjoyed the students and felt blessed, if not a little old, when former pupils would see her around town and introduce her to the next generation as his or her favorite elementary school teacher! By far her favorite pastime and passion was competing at contract bridge. There was always a tournament to schedule a vacation around, hands to discuss with partners and opinions to be shared. She cherished the wide circle of friends made at the bridge table, including her most common playing partner, her husband. She also loved landscaping and decorating her homes and “camp” in Doaktown and entertaining friends and family. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Edward; by sons, Mark of Sarasota, Fla., and Alan and his wife, Mona; the grandchildren, Matthew, Elizabeth and Benjamin of Holden; her uncle, Alden and his wife, Barbara Pearlstein, of Sarasota, Fla.; first cousins, Jeff, Myrna, Susan and Steve; a sister, Marjorie and her husband, Gerald Wadness, of Natick, Mass.; niece, Amy and her husband, Bill Walsh, of Wakefield, Mass.; and nephew, Mike Wadness and his wife, Cindy, of Natick, Mass. A memorial service and burial will be held in Bangor in the summer. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to NYU Cancer Institute, care of Dr. Matthew Harris, 160 East 34th St., New York, NY 10016.
