PARKLAND, Fla. – Rose D. (Derman) Etscovitz of Parkland, Fla., passed away Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at University Hospital in Tamarac, Fla. She was born Feb. 17, 1912, in New York City, a daughter of the late Louis and Sarah Derman. Mrs. Etscovitz was the wife of the late Abraham Etscovitz, who died in 1989. Prior to her marriage to Abraham Etscovitz in 1940, she worked as a secretary for the Land O’Lakes Co. in New York City. After her marriage, she and her husband lived in Presque Isle, moving to Caribou in 1954. They lived in Caribou until 1982, when they moved to Nashua, N.H. After the death of her husband in 1989, Rose moved permanently to Lauderhill, Fla. While living in Maine, Rose volunteered at her children’s schools, at Cary Memorial Hospital in Caribou as part of the Ladies Auxiliary, and at the School for Disabled Children in Presque Isle. She was also a life member of Hadassah and B’ nai B’rit. She was known as the consummate hostess, a gourmet cook, an avid reader, and loved playing bridge and canasta. As a golfer, she boasted recording three holes-in-one, getting two of them in one summer. She was known for her quick wit, her wonderful stories, and her zest for life. At the age of 50, she began attending classes at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. She is a former member of Temple Beth Abraham in Nashua and the Aroostook Jewish Community in Presque Isle. In addition to being predeceased by her husband, Abraham Etscovitz, she was predeceased by her brother, Abraham Derman; and her sisters, Anne Mack and Ruth Stark. She is survived by her children, Laura Horowitz of Nashua, N.H., Jane Goldsmith of East Lyme, Conn., and Janice and Richard Etscovitz of Marietta, Ga.; by her beloved grandchildren, Attys. Anna and Jonathan Horowitz of Houston, Texas, Molly Steele and David Goldsmith of Seattle, Wash.; by her sister, Emily Harris of Framingham, Mass.; and by many nieces and nephews. A funeral in her honor will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Temple Beth Abraham, 4 Raymond St., Nashua, N.H. Friends are invited to attend. Rabbi Mark D. Finkel will officiate. Interment prayers and burial will follow in Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon, Mass. Memorial observation (Shiva) will be held at the home of her daughter, Laura Horowitz, 15 Walden Pond Drive, Nashua, N.H., Tuesday through Thursday with minyanim at 7:30 p.m. and Friday until 2 p.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider a memorial donation to the Abraham Etscovitz Scholarship Fund, Caribou High School, Sweden St., Caribou ME 04736 or to the Holocaust Center, Keene State College, Keene, NH 03431 or to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are in the care of locally owned Davis Funeral Home, one Lock St., Nashua, N.H.
