ORONO and WACO, Texas – Capt. Rowan Malphurs went to be with the Lord May 13, 2006, in Waco, Texas. He was born Dec. 3, 1945, in Mexia, Texas. He moved to Orono in 1961, where he graduated from Orono High School, Class of 1963. He was captain of the Orono High School football team and led them to state championships for two years. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1967, with a degree in psychology and a commission in the U.S. Army. He was a career Army officer who proudly served his country, in Vietnam, 1969-1970, with a 14-month tour beginning in 1969. He became disabled as a result of his tour in Vietnam and received an honorable discharge in 1971. He is survived by two daughters and six grandchildren.
