CHERRYFIELD – Roy E. Farren Jr., 80, passed away Jan. 20, 2005, at his residence after an extended illness. He was born Nov. 1, 1924, in Cherryfield, the son of the late Roy E. Farren Sr. and Bertha W. (McDevitt) Farren. Roy graduated from Cherryfield Academy at the age of 16. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Hughes. Roy was seriously wounded when a kamikaze plane struck the ship during the battle of the Leyte Gulf. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Roy was a member of the American Legion Post No. 8 and a 52 year member of the Narraguagus Masonic Lodge Post No. 88 in Cherryfield. Roy is survived by his loving wife, Martha (Norris) Farren; children, Dr. Gary J. Farren and his wife, Barbara, of Hampden, Cynthia Smith and husband, Paul, of Cherryfield, Vicki Crabtree of California, and Nedra Colbeth and husband, Fulton, of Cherryfield; three grandchildren, Christopher Smith and wife, Samantha, Corey Smith and wife, Sissel, and Aaron Crabtree; five precious great-grandchildren; sister, Verna Bayrd; and several nieces and nephews. Roy was predeceased by sisters, Shirley Dobbins, Elva Willey, Avis Yeaton, and Helen Haycock. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Milbridge, officiated by the Rev. Joyce Ingrisano.
