SWAN’S ISLAND – Roy May, 79, died Feb. 7, 2004, at a Bangor healthcare facility after a long illness. He was born March 11, 1924, in Naples, the son of Guy and Agnes (Currie) May. Roy worked for the Sebago Ice Co. in Portland as a young man. He moved to Swan’s Island in 1943 and worked as a woodcutter. There he met his wife of 58 years, Theo Buswell. They were married June 4, 1945, and moved to Portland, where Roy worked at the Delano Lumber Co. Later they moved back to Swan’s Island, where he worked with Filmore Turner as a stern-man. Soon after, he bought Filmore’s boat and began his own lobstering career. In his spare time he cut wood and worked on the town roads. In 1975, he had a new boat built, the “Lisa A.,” a 36′ boat built by Fernald Carter. Roy retired from lobstering in 1989. Those who knew him will remember his dry sense of humor, his work ethic, determination and strength. He enjoyed fishing in the company of his sons and daughter. He will be sadly missed by all that knew him. He is survived by his beloved wife, Theo (Buswell) May of Swan’s Island; son, Leonard May and wife, Jackie; daughter, Lisa and husband, Lawrence (Sonny) Stanley; daughter-in-law, Gwen May and surrogate son, Micah May, all of Swan’s Island; a brother, Clayton May of Arizona; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
