GARDEN GROVE, Calif. – Ruth Brotten Sands, 85, passed away peacefully Feb. 20, 2005. She was born Oct. 14, 1919, in Norway, Mich. to the late Rev. Carl L. Brotten and Gerda Larson Brotten. Her stepmother, Anna Brotten played an important part of Ruth’s childhood. Ruth graduated from Negaunee High School in 1937. She continued her education graduating with a bachelor of science from Northern State College in 1941 and at Michigan State University earned a masters of science. She worked in the Resident Hall System for more than 17 years at Michigan State University and was Director of School Lunch Program for three years in Bangor. For another three years she was a consultant to state school lunch programs in North Dakota. Ruth retired after completing 13 years as director of food services at the University of North Dakota. She was Past-President of the Maine State School Food Services Association and active in the National Association of College and University Food Services, as well as the Quota Club in Grand Forks. Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Paul E. Sands. She is survived by her son, Raymond E. Sands of Garden Grove, Calif.; and several cousins in this country as well as Norway and Sweden. She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Garden Grove. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Bjork and Zhulkie Funeral Home, of Ishpeming, Mich.
