BREWER – Ruth Elliot Buck, 86, passed away peacefully June 18, 2006, in Hollister, Calif. She was born June 2, 1920, in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, Canada and grew up on Peak’s Island, the daughter of Florence Carroll and Ernest Elliot. Ruth graduated from Portland High School in 1937 and from Farmington Teacher’s College in 1941. She was a public school teacher of home economics in Falmouth, Portland, and Bangor, for a total of 17 years. Ruth was a past matron in the Order of the Eastern Star, Cornerstone Chapter and past grand matron for Grand Chapter of Maine, OES, 1973-74. She devoted her time and energies to many other organizations including, Beta Sigma Phi, Home Economics Association, National Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, Credit Women International, Athene Club; board member for Phillips Strickland Home, volunteer for the Ringling Museum and Women’s Exchange in Sarasota, Fla. and volunteer at Maine Medical Center in Portland. In retirement, she divided her time between Portland and Bradenton, Fla. Loving wife of the late Embert C. Buck, she is survived by her son, Carroll Buck and daughter-in-law, Cathy Buck, of Hollister, Calif.; her daughter, Leanne Ferland and her son-in-law, Joe Perry, of Hermon and Bradenton, Fla.; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Friends are invited to remember and celebrate Ruth’s life 1 p.m. Friday, June 30, in the chapel at Woodfords Congregational Church, 202 Woodford St., Portland. A reception will be afterward.
