BREWER – Ruth Macdonald Sullivan died Friday, Oct. 13, 2006. She was born Nov. 15, 1913, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada. Ruth graduated as a registered nurse from Ottawa Civic Hospital and received her masters degree in public health from the University of Toronto. Ruth started her nursing career working for the Red Cross in rural communities without doctors. She joined the Canadian army as a nurse during World War II. Ruth served in England and married her husband, John R. Sullivan, who was a doctor in the Canadian army serving in Europe. Ruth assisted her husband John in his medical practice in Woodstock, New Brunswick, Millinocket and Brewer. Ruth later worked at Eastern Maine Medical Hospital as a nurse. Ruth returned to public health care and became nursing director of Bangor District Nursing until her retirement at age 72. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. John R. Sullivan; a sister, Dorothy; and a son, James. She is survived by two children, Sharon of Chelmsford, Mass., and John of Gloucester, Mass.; and a sister, Elizabeth of Maryland.
