RUTH PIKE BERRY BRUNSWICK – Ruth Pike Berry died unexpectedly, but peacefully, in Brunswick on Jan. 8, 2004. Born Dec. 29, 1916, at Lubec, daughter of Harold and Sarah (Mitchell) Pike. Ruth graduated from Lubec High School in 1935 and Colby College in 1939, where she was active in student government, musical activities, and the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Ruth taught languages at Lubec High School and at Washington Academy in East Machias. She married Walter E. Berry of Machiasport in 1941. They lived in various Maine and Massachusetts communities. During the early years of their marriage, she served as the Machiasport representative on the School Union 102 school board. She is Past Worthy Matron of the Warren Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. They lived 15 years in Aroostook County, where she was a member of AAUW and participated in church activities. In 1962, they moved to Brewer and in 1974 to Marshfield after Walter’s retirement. While in Marshfield, Ruth was a member and trustee of the Down East Community Hospital Auxiliary and an active member of the craft group at the Congregational Church in Machias, working on the group’s blueberry quilt from 1977-2003. In 1999, Ruth moved to Cadigan Lodge at the Highlands in Topsham. Ruth was predeceased by her husband in 1993; and by an infant daughter, Susan. She is survived by her son, John F. and his wife, Jane, of Harpswell; a daughter, Janice B. Collins of Livonia Mich.; a grandson, Mark E. and his wife, Julia, of Fossil Ore.; a grandson, Glenn R. and his wife, Audrey; and great-granddaughter, Danielle Ruth, all of Arlington, Mass.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Burial will be private. A memorial service will follow at a later date. If desired, donations may be made in her memory to the Centre Street Congregational Church, P.O. Box 265, Machias, ME 04654.
