WESTMANLAND – Ruth Whitney Filomena, 91, passed away Dec. 22, 2006, in Caribou, after a brief illness. She was born July 20, 1915, in Jamaica Plains, N.Y., the daughter of Harry and Margaret (Armstrong) Whitney. Ruth married her childhood sweetheart, John, July 1, 1933. Married for 72 years, Ruth and John celebrated life’s triumphs and withstood life’s tragedies; always together. Having lived in Long Island, Arizona, Florida and Maine, they made many friends along life’s journey. Lovingly known as “Grammy” to most, Ruth will be sadly missed for her vitality, independence and willingness to always lend an ear. Living the past 22 years in Westmanland, Ruth continued to be a source of love and inspiration to family and friends alike. Ruth was an active member of the Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church, New Sweden and was also a past matron of the Advance Chapter No. 588 O.E.S. Ruth was predeceased by her husband, John; their two daughters, Janet Filomena and Barbara Margeson; and by her brother, Harry “Brud” Whitney. She is survived by a son, John Filomena Jr. of Long Island, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. Ruth will also be greatly missed by close friends who came to think of her and John as family. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, at the Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church, New Sweden, with the Rev. James Morgan officiating.
