BAR HARBOR – Samuel “Sam” Dennis Mitchell Jr., 86, died Oct. 2, 2007, at Mount Desert Island Hospital, Bar Harbor. He was born Oct. 16, 1920, in Bar Harbor, the son of Samuel Dennis and Annie V. (Norton) Mitchell Sr. Sam worked for the Town of Bar Harbor, the Blue Nose Ferry Terminal for 12 years and then went on to work for the Jackson Laboratory for 18 years. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor and a member of the American Legion No. 25 and the VFW for many years. Sam also attended the Church of Life and Praise, Ellsworth. Sam is survived by two sons, Samuel D. Mitchell III and wife, Linda, of Northeast Harbor and Stephen D. Mitchell Sr. of Bar Harbor; one daughter, Sherrie Welton and husband, Ted Sr., of Southwest Harbor; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 51 years, Susan Mae Mitchell; one brother, Donald Mitchell; a stepbrother, Bernard Hawkes; a stepsister, Eleanor Carilelle; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Mitchell; a granddaughter, Ruth Mitchell. Friends are invited to call 12:30-2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at First Baptist Church, Bar Harbor, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. with Pastor James F. Heard officiating.
