BANGOR and MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – Sarah E. Hersey, 92, wife of the late Hobart A. Hersey, passed away Jan. 30, 2008, at a Mechanicsburg, Pa., hospital. She was born Dec. 13, 1915, in Washburn, the daughter of Elbridge and Gracie (Gould) Whitten. Sarah graduated from Washburn High School in 1933, and the Hub Academy of Beauty Culture, Boston. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, Bangor, and instrumental in the development of the preschool at the church. She was a volunteer at Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor; Monroe Regional Medical Center, Ocala, Fla.; and also the secretary to manage the volunteer services at the medical center. She is survived by her daughters, Ada H. Sloane and her husband, Robert, of Mech-anicsburg, Pa., and Lenore G. Hersey of Reston, Va.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Mary Ellen Blanchard. Friends may call 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, with the Rev. Stephanie Salinas, pastor of First Baptist Church, Bangor, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments immediately after the service at Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor.
