WINTHROP – Serena E. Whaley, 10, of Winthrop, died early Saturday morning, Feb. 5, 2005, surrounded by her family, at Maine Medical Center in Portland due to complications from surgery. Serena was born Dec. 19, 1994, in Augusta, the daughter of Steven and Donna (Staples) Whaley. Serena was in fourth grade at Winthrop Grade School and was an inspiration to everyone around her, especially her brothers, Michael O’Leary and Skyler Whaley. She always had a smile on her face and new how to put one on everyone else’s. Serena enjoyed basketball, gymnastics, and many outdoor activities. Serena was deeply loved and will be missed beyond measure by mother and father, Donna and Steve Whaley, who loved her more than life itself; her brothers, Michael O’Leary and Skyler Whaley; her grandmother, Blanche Whaley, of Caribou; her Aunt Staci and Uncle Scott, Aunt Norma and Uncle Sid, Aunt Joann and Uncle Eric, Auntie Terri and her friend, Ron; her two cats, Mickey and Shadow; her special friend, Ashley, special cousins, Corey, Chris, and Katie and many cousins, extended family members, and friends, especially Rick and Monica Conant and their family. Special thanks go to the nursing staff at the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center and Jason Grundstrom-Whitney for their tender care and support of the entire Whaley family. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Serena’s family 3-6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A memorial celebration of Serena’s life will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Winthrop. Please bring your favorite memories of Serena to share.
