BURNHAM – Sheilya Eileen Wood Spiegel, 65, of Winnecook Rd., Burnham, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 12, 2004, after a courageous battle with melanoma. She was born Sept. 19, 1938, in Burnham, the daughter of Charles and Agnes Milton Wood. She attended grades one to eight at Patterson’s Corner in Burnham and graduated in 1957 from MCI in Pittsfield. In 1961, she earned a Baccalaureate Degree from the University of Maine, with a major in Home Economics. In 1960, she married a classmate, Ronald F. Spiegel of Seekonk, Mass. Two years after graduation, they settled in Burnham, in the Wood homestead. Sheilya was a lifelong educator whose last position was at Lawrence Junior High School, Fairfield, where she gave generously of herself and her skills to her students in preparing them for life. She was a charter member of Winnecook Christian Church and a member of the choir where her skill as a vocalist and pianist made her especially welcome. An accomplished homemaker, Sheilya was widely known for her cooking and sewing. She loved people, nature, her farm, the ocean, swimming and dancing and trips to Alaska. Sheilya is survived by her husband, Ron; her daughter and her husband, Heidi and Chris Nolan of Camden; two sons, Franz of Burnham, and Kristyon and his wife Tenney, of Searsport; five grandchildren, Kyle, Aaron and Hannah, all of Camden, and Charlie and Emma Spiegel, both of Searsport. She is also survived by a cousin, Burley Holt, his wife Joyce and family, and cousin Kimberly Hunt and family, all of Burnham. A celebration of the life of Sheilya Eileen Wood Spiegel will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at the First Baptist Church of Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Sheilya W. Spiegel Carillon Fund, Winnecook Christian Church, 3 Chapel Lane, Burnham, Maine 04922-3128 or to the Sheilya W. Spiegel Memorial Scholarship Fund, 309 Winnecook Rd., Burnham, Maine 04922.
