PENOBSCOT – Sheldon Albert Gross, 56, passed away March 26, 2005, at the VA Medical Center in Togus after a long illness. He was born Sept. 29, 1948, in Castine, the son of Albert E. and Arlene (Bridges) Gross. Sheldon graduated from George Stevens Academy in 1966. He studied theology and literature at Gordon College in Wenham, Mass., before serving in the military from 1969 to 1972. In 1974, he received a bachelor of arts in English literature from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo., and was a graduate student in the school of forestry resources at the University of Maine from 1979-81. Sheldon taught adult education at George Stevens Academy, was a teaching assistant at the UMaine and worked for Literacy Volunteers. He was involved in several conservation and forestry projects in the area before his illness. Sheldon had been a reporter and photographer for Penobscot Bay Press and sports editor at the Ellsworth American. At the time of his illness he worked as a copy editor at the Bangor Daily News. Sheldon enjoyed team sports, hunting and fishing, and photography. He was a kind and gentle man with an incredible sense of humor which will be missed. Sheldon is survived by his mother of Penobscot, three brothers, David and his wife, Patty, Cordell and his wife, Cupe, and Mark, all of Penobscot; one sister, Alta Harrison and her husband, Tom, of Penobscot and Port St. Lucie, Fla.; one son, Cory Carroll Gross of Blue Hill; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father in 1990. A service will be held and announced at a later date.
