MILLINOCKET – Shirley Barker Cook, 84, of Millinocket, died peacefully Nov. 4, 2004, at a Bangor hospital, surrounded by her loving children. She was born July 23, 1920, in Oakfield, the daughter of Lester A. and Mercy M. Barker. She was the wife of the late Gordon H. Cook, to whom she was married 53 years. After graduating from Husson College in Bangor, she began teaching, a career that brought her much joy. Shirley taught at Oakfield High School, Schenck High School in East Millinocket and Stearns High School in Millinocket. She loved her students and was loved by them in return. In Millinocket, Shirley was surrounded by a wonderful group of friends, including the members of “S & B.” She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Millinocket. Shirley loved crafts and spent many hours quilting, cross-stitching, basket making and painting. Her favorite activity, though, was spending time with her family, whom she loved dearly, and spent many summers at the family camp on Pleasant Pond in Island Falls. Shirley was predeceased by her brother, Laurence; and her sister, Izetta. She is survived by her beloved children, Gordon and his wife, Dorothy, of Sharpsburg, Ga., Timothy and his wife, Agnes, of Essex Junction, Vt., Laurence and his wife, Martha, of Bangor, and Melissa and her partner, Christine Moshier, of Colchester, Vt.; also surviving are seven grandchildren, Travis and his wife, Michelle, Bradford, Peter and his wife, Shannon, Lisa and her husband, Tom, Matthew, Shani and her husband, Jason, and Ryan and girlfriend, Jessie. Shirley also had four great-grandchildren, Shanice, Sophia, Ethan and Adam, as well as many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at the First Congregational Church of Millinocket with the Rev. Carolyn Bradley officiating. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, at the church.
