CAMDEN – Shirley Cookson Hall, 78, died Sunday, June 10, 2007, at Anderson Inn, Quarry Hill, Camden. Born in Oakland, she was the daughter of Ernest and Elzada (Nickerson) Cookson. She was a 1946 graduate of Camden High School and attended Colby College, Waterville. On Sept. 10, 1950, she married Gilbert E. Hall. They lived in Italy during Gilbert’s military service and enjoyed traveling throughout Europe. In 1967, Capt. and Mrs. Hall moved back to Camden where they ran several businesses including Pen Bay Pilots. Mrs. Hall was a very active member of the First Congregational Church, Camden, where she had served as church school superintendent and as church president. Her other activities included former president and board member of the Camden YMCA, former chairman and board member for SAD No. 28 school board, and, at the time of her death, was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star having served as worthy matron and secretary. She was also an active member of the P.E.O Sisterhood and had founded the P.E.O. Chapter F serving as the first president of the Northeast District. She made many special friendships and memories with her sisters of P.E.O. and the Eastern Star. Shirley was a very avid bridge player and spent many happy hours playing, including weekend tournaments at Camp Kiev. She loved to cook and hold family gatherings. Many happy hours were spent with her husband, children and grandchildren at their cottage in Lincolnville. She loved to travel with friends and family, most especially the trip the entire family took to Walt Disney World celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Surviving is her husband, Capt. Gilbert E. Hall of Camden; two sons, Michael Hall and his wife, Dot, of Camden and Capt. Douglas Hall and his wife, Janet, of Rockport; one daughter, Cynthia Sylvester and her husband, John, of Rockport; grandchildren, Kyle Sylvester and his wife, Courtney, Heather Sylvester, Stephanie Raddish and David Hall, all of Rockport, Jessica Shorey and her husband, Andrew, of Tennessee, Jeremy Payson of Camden; two great-granddaughters, Julie Saunders and Jennifer Saunders of Warren; one sister, Lois Silloway of Warren; three sisters-in-law, Faye Leland of West Rockport, Mary Freeman of South China and Ruth Barter of Jefferson; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 16, with a reception after, at First Congregational Church, 55 Elm St., Camden, with the Rev. Kevin Pleas officiating.
