MACHIAS – Shirley E. Anthony, 97, died Aug. 23, 2006, in Machias after a brief illness, with his daughter by his side. He was born Nov. 24, 1908, in Kennebec, the son of the late Alfred and Laura (Foss) Anthony. Mr. Anthony attended local schools and was educated in Machias. He worked as an automotive mechanic at Quoddy Chevrolet for many years. Later he went on to work at Schoppee Dairy Farm delivering milk. He went on to work at Machias Textile Mill, Machias, as a slasher for many years, retiring in the mid-1970s. He was an excellent small engine repairman. He also loved hunting and fishing. He shared 24 years of marriage with Bertha (Whitehouse) Anthony, who died 1964. Family members include a daughter, Audrey E. Norton and her husband, Alton, of Wesley; three grandchildren, Byron Norton and his wife, Pamela, of Wesley, Gordon Norton and his companion, Kathy, of Gilbert, Ariz. and Clifford Norton and his wife, Tina, of Chandler, Ariz.; seven great-grandchildren, Alison, Dakota, Wayne, Matthew, Joshua, Jennifer, Cooper; one great-great-grandson, Izyck; a brother, Eugene Anthony of Milbridge; two sisters, Julia Johnson of Connecticut and Margarette Wood of Machias; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Amos; and a sister, Charlotte. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at Joseph Getchell Cemetery, Marshfield, with Pastor John Sprague officiating. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. After the graveside services, the family welcomes all to his home at 14 Old County Road, Marshfield, for a time of fellowship. If desired, donations may be made to the charity of ones choice.
