WINDHAM – Shirley Juanita Maddocks Hatch, 86, died Feb. 29, 2004, at Ledgewood Manor Nursing Home in Windham. Born in Millinocket, the daughter of Daniel W. and Bertha Lewis Maddocks, she was the wife of the late Cleon H. Hatch. She graduated from Stearns High School and Ricker Junior College. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colby College, and a Master of Arts degree from University of New Hampshire. Following graduation, she was a librarian at Good Will. She later taught at Searsport High, Woodbury High in Salem, N.H. and with her husband at Ricker Classical Institute and Fryeburg Academy, retiring in 1972. The Hatches enjoyed organic farming, raising horses, Airdales, and goats; and were actively involved in animal right movements, civil rights, peace and environmental groups. They also had books of poems published. While living at her home in Denmark she attended the Denmark Bible Chapel. She is survived by a brother, Lewis I. Maddocks of Martinsburg, W.Va.; a sister, Flora Maddocks Fairfield of Barrington, R.I.; several nieces and nephews and several cousins, including a very dear cousin, Lorraine Merry of Windham. A memorial service will be held in May at her Denmark home “Wild Apple Farm” with Rev. Ron Tardif officiating.
