SUFFOLK, Va. – Retired Capt. Shirley E. Merrill Warren, nurse corps, U.S. Navy, 71, passed away Sunday, Dec. 10, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the beloved wife of the late Herman Randolph Warren and daughter of the late Verne A. Merrill and Pearl V. Merrill of St. Albans. She was born in Maine. Shirley received her nursing degree at Simmons College in Massachusetts and her master’s degree from the University of Washington. She worked in hospitals in Hartland and San Francisco, before entering the Navy. Her Navy career included being stationed in San Diego, Adak, Alaska, Kittery, Philadelphia, Cuba, Philippines and Norfolk, Va. Shirley retired in October 1983 after 22 years. She leaves behind three stepchildren, Richard A. Warren, Walter Gary Warren and Cynthia Jo Garthright; and six grandchildren. Shirley was the sister-in-law of Anna V. Merrill and Evangeline M. Gray; nieces, Sharon McCann and Karen Parke; nephew, Gary Merrill; nine great-nieces. Shirley was predeceased by her two brothers, Clayton G. Merrill and Clifford Merrill, both of Connecticut. A Christian service and burial will be held in January in Virginia with a service in St. Albans, in the summer of 2007.
