WOLCOTT, Conn. – Mrs. Shirley (Retallack) Hammond, 76, of 120 Nichols Road, died Thursday, July 1, 2004, at Connecticut Hospice in Branford, Conn., after a long struggle with colorectal cancer. She was the wife of the late Rev. Benjamin Hammond. Mrs. Hammond was born June 22, 1928, in Kulpmont, Pa., a daughter of the late Herbert and Martha (Schiller) Retallack. She grew up in Pelham, N.Y., and graduated from Pelham Memorial High School. She was also a graduate of State University at New York in New Paltz, N.Y., with a bachelor’s degree in teaching and taught in New Rochelle, N.Y. She earned a master’s degree from the University of Maine at Orono and taught in Bangor. Mrs. Hammond later taught in Bridgeport, Conn., then settled in Waterbury, Conn., teaching for many years. She retired from teaching elementary school in 1991. Mrs. Hammond was an active member of the Wolcott Congregational Church, serving as the delegate to the Greater Waterbury Ministerial Association where she co-chaired the toy programs and was a delegate to the Naugatuck Ministerial Association. She was also an active member of the American Association of University Women for 37 years serving in many capacities, especially as the co-chair of the Book and Author luncheons. Mrs. Hammond served two years as president of the Wolcott Farmingbury Woman’s Club in 1992 and 1993. She also served as a Hospice volunteer for the Visiting Nurse’s Association. She leaves three sons, Donald Hammond of West Palm Beach, Fla., Dr. Douglas Hammond, D.C. of Azendorf, Germany, and Darryl Hammond of Wolcott, Conn.; two brothers, Edward Retallack of Durham, Conn., and Raymond Retallack of l Dorado Hills, Calif.; and nine grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at the Wolcott Congregational Church, 185 Center St., Wolcott, Conn. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery, Wolcott. There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurses Association, 50 Brookside Dr., Waterbury, CT 06708. The Alderson Funeral Home of Waterbury, 70 Central Ave., is in charge of arrangements.
