DEXTER – Spurgeon Garnet Nelson, 87, died April 24, 2005, at a Dexter health care facility. He was born Oct. 20, 1917, at Presque Isle, a son of Perry and Nellie (Thomas) Nelson. He farmed and worked in the woods for many years. Later he worked for the Maine Central Railroad until his retirement in 1980. Spurgeon was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dexter, and the Plymouth Lodge I.O.O.F. in Dexter. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy (Dunn) Nelson, who died Sept. 29, 2000; a granddaughter, Heidi Nelson, who died Sept. 11, 2001; sisters, Ethel Barney, Avis Shaw, Lois McKenney, Helen Higgins, and Lela Nelson; and brothers, Roy, Andrew, Earl and Glen Nelson. He is survived by a son, Dennis and wife, Julie Nelson, of Corinna; two daughters, Rebecca Pitcher of Corinna and Roberta and husband, Rodney Scott, of Garland; two sisters, Shirley Campbell of Dover-Foxcroft and Dorothy Towle of Augusta; a brother, Perry and wife, Phyllis Nelson, of Corinna; six grandchildren, Bill and wife, Debbie Webber, Kevin and wife, Nicci Webber, all of Garland, Lori and husband, Scott Atkins, of Charleston, Jeffery and wife, Cristie Pitcher, Michael and wife, Gina Pitcher, all of Corinna, Stephen and wife, Brenda Pitcher, of Kernersville, N.C.; great-grand-children, Brittany and Brianna Atkins of Charleston, Abigail, Katlyn, Jessica, Matthew and Issac Webber of Garland, Amanda, Ashley, Roxanne, Melissa, Daylee, and Gary Pitcher of Corinna, Leandra, Alicia and Shawna Pitcher of Kernersville, N.C.; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, at the First Baptist Church of Dexter, with Pastor A. Maurice Neal officiating. Friends may call at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of services. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dexter Health Care Patient Fund, 64 Park St., Dexter, ME 04930.
