LINCOLN and SAN DIEGO Stewart C. Moody died Dec. 12, 2007, at his home. He was born May 19, 1918, in Lincoln, the son of Alexis W.D. and Jessie Carrington Moody. Stewart graduated from Mattanawcook Academy, Lincoln, in 1935. After working several years in Foxboro, Mass., he joined the Army Air Corps in 1941. He was stationed in England during World War II and flew 35 missions as the top turret gunner on a B-17 flying fortress. He was shot down twice; once over the North Sea and a second time over Germany, but was able to escape back to England on both occasions. He remained a member of the Army Reserve and enrolled at U.C.L.A in 1947. He was called up for the Korean War in 1950, as an officer in the infantry. He also served in Vietnam and eventually rose to the rank of colonel, with more than 30 years of service. Stewart was a member of the 224th Infantry Regiment Association, Claremont Lodge of Masons, a life member of the Association of the U.S. Army and a member of First Congregational Church of Lincoln. Stewart and Hillie spent six months in San Diego and six months in Maine for 23 years. Stewart will be remembered for his good sense of humor, story telling and his ability to finish the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle. He was predeceased by his first wife, Esther Robins Moody; a son, Stewart Robins Moody; his parents; and a sister, Kay. He is survived by his wife, Hildreth Brown Moody; his son, Michael Moody and his wife, Sally Hibbard, of Santa Monica, Calif.; his daughter, Sherry Doyle and her husband, Alan, of Ojai, Calif.; five grandchildren, Wade and Ellen Moody and Andrew, Scott and Jackson Doyle. He is also survived by a stepdaughter, Susan Goding; stepson, Robert Brown; four step-grand-children, Bryan Brown, Joshua and Nicholas Goding and Gretchen Cramb; and a sister, Hope Martin of Maryland. Memorial services will be held at a later date in California. Donations in his memory can be made to the First Congregational Church in Lincoln.
