PRESQUE ISLE – Sumi James, 72, wife of the late Leroy W. James passed away Sunday morning, Oct. 10, 2004, at her residence in Presque Isle, with her family at her side after a long illness. She was born Jan. 21, 1932, at Misawa, Japan, the eldest daughter of Fukumatsu and Sui (Yamabata) Shimoda. Married March 19, 1952, she celebrated a joyous union with the love of her life and cherished soul mate until his passing in 1991. She was a teacher of Japanese dance as well as a devoted housewife, mother, and helpmate. She enjoyed gardening and cooking her native Japanese cuisine. Sumi is survived by her son and his wife, Michael Shigeo and Heidi Jo James; two grandchildren, Kyle Jason and Nichole Christin James, all of Presque Isle; three sisters, Toshiko Maeoka and her husband, Tsuiko Shimoda, and Seiko Shimoda; and one brother, Iso Shimoda and his wife, all of Japan. There will be a private service for the family. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle. Interment will be in Sierra Hills Memorial Park, Sacramento, Calif.
