EXETER – Sumner R. Thompson, 87, died Jan. 19, 2005, at a Pittsfield hospital. He was born Aug. 4, 1917, at Hermon, a son of Robert and Addie (Rose) Thompson. He retired from the Pratt and Whitney Company, North Haven, Conn., in 1976 and returned to Maine at that time. Sumner was a member of Pacific Lodge, AF & AM, in Exeter and attended the Exeter Full Gospel Church. He was predeceased by his first wife, Annie; a son, Roger; a daughter, Hildreth; three brothers, Norman, Raymond and Donald; and a sister, Avis. In addition to his wife, Pauline (Gould) Thompson of Exeter, he is survived by three sons, Ernest of Dixmont, Clyde of Exeter, and Sumner Jr. “Sonny” of Newport; five daughters, Marguerite Mallory of Hampton, Virginia, Vivian Stevens of Exeter, Barbara Bessette of Lowell, Vt., Sandra Carpenter of Ocala, Fla., and Arlene Ryder of Exeter; five stepchildren, Eugene, Richard, James, Wayne and Joyce; a brother, Richard Thompson of Hermon; two sisters, Mary Bragg of Bangor, and Roberta Harding of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; 41 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, with the Rev. Chris Faloon officiating. Spring committal services will be held at Morse’s Corner Cemetery, Corinna.
