DEER ISLE – Susan Chesney Wakelin, of Rumson, N.J. and Deer Isle, died accidentally Sept. 11, 2006, while kayaking in East Penobscot Bay. Susan was born May 27, 1941, in Albany, N.Y., the daughter of the late J. Dukehart Chesney and Marjory Hill Chesney. She graduated from Bethlehem Central High School in Delmar, N.Y. in 1959 and Vermont College in 1962. Susan and her late husband, James “Terry”, and their family, lived for many years in New Jersey, California and Paris, but they most enjoyed their many summers in Deer Isle. Susan spent many years as a volunteer for the Head Start Program and Child Advocacy Program in New Jersey. She also worked at the Tower Hill Church preschool program and loved working with children. Susan is survived by three children, Jeffrey and Anne Wakelin and their sons, Henry and Sam, of Andover, Mass., Heather Wakelin of Raleigh, N.C., Steve and Denise Wakelin and their daughter, Madison, of North Andover, Mass. Susan is also survived by her mother, Marjorie of Blue Hill; a sister, Lucy of Vero Beach, Fla.; brothers, Alan of Knoxville, Tenn. and Jim of Ann Arbor, Mich.; many loving nieces and nephews. The family thanks the U.S. Coast Guard, the Maine Maritime Patrol, the Deer Isle Stonington Fire Department and the many volunteers who combed the Deer Isle area searching for Susan. A memorial service and celebration of Susan’s life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, in Deer Isle. Arrangements are being handled by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Ellsworth. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Sunset Congregational Church, Sunset, ME 04683, in Susan’s name.
