EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. – Winston Bruce Ireland, 85, died Sept. 12, 2006, at Heritage Hall, Agawam, Mass. He was the loving husband of 59 years to Jean Heald Ireland and devoted father of four. He was born July 26, 1921, in Fort Fairfield, the youngest son of Coleman Oscar and Jennie Alta (Jameson) Ireland. He graduated from Fort Fairfield High School and the University of Maine – Orono, prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served as a second lieutenant in the infantry in France during World War II, where he was also a POW, held in Germany. After his return to Fort Fairfield after the war, he was employed by M.C. Locke Distributing Co., before joining the Farm Credit Service in Fort Fairfield. During his years with Farm Credit, he also lived in Waterville, Hackettstown N.J., and Hampton N.H., before finally moving to East Longmeadow, Mass., in 1964. He retired from Farm Credit Service as vice president after 36 years of service. He was a member of the East Longmeadow Congregational Church, where he sang in the choir and served on the board of deacons. Mr. Ireland loved gardening, playing golf, fishing, traveling and spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by four sisters, Audrey Brochu, Marian Ireland, Ruth Langley and Helen Lister; a brother, Carl Ireland. He is survived by his wife, Jean; and their four children, Joan Pieczarka of Apulia Station, N.Y., Bette Lotterman and her husband, Stephen, of Whitinsville, Mass., Robert Ireland and his wife, Donna Benson, of Narragansett, R.I., Carla Boissonault and her husband, Doug, of Morris Plains, N.J.; by his brother, Walter Ireland of Caribou; sister, Glenis Hale of St. Louis, Mo.; six grandchildren, Dr. Seth Lotterman and Megan Lotterman, Shannon Pieczarka and Jennie Hathaway, Timothy and Lani Ireland; one great-grandchild, Michaela Ireland. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Hafey Funeral Home. A memorial service for Mr. Ireland will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at the First Congregational Church, East Longmeadow, Mass. Burial at Greenlawn Cemetery, East Longmeadow, Mass., will be private.
