PITTSFIELD – Susan M. Curtis, 88, died Oct. 25, 2003, at her home in Pittsfield. She was born Dec. 4,1914, in South Springfield, a daughter of Bertron and Myrtle (Dicker) McLaughlin. She was married to Ralph Curtis on Feb. 12, 1955. Sue worked for many years as a certified nurse’s assistant both in Massachusetts, as well as at the Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield. She lived with her aunt and uncle, Luther and Bernice Leighton on Webster Plantation, and moved to Pittsfield in later years to care for them. Following her retirement she volunteered at the hospital in Pittsfield. Sue loved and spent many hours caring for young children to whom she was known as Grammie Sue. She was a member of Sebasticook Valley Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, the Howland Methodist Church and the Women’s Society of Christian Services. She was predeceased by her husband in August 2001; and by her brothers, Carroll, George, and Clifford; and her sisters, Velma Downs and Dorothy Phillips. She is survived by a brother, Grover, and his wife, Eleanor McLaughlin, of Orono; two sisters, Laura and her husband, Raymond Christianson, of Holden, and Barbara and her husband, Randall Tourtillotte, of Howland; special sisters-in-law, Beryle, Rebecca and Marie McLaughlin; she was treasured by several nieces and nephews, Rebecca Briggs, Sandra Tolman, Stuart McLaughlin, Robert, Richard, and Reginald McLaughlin, Linda Cook, Betty Violette, Laura Robinson, Karen Leonard, Deborah Cruz, Ann Vadikan, Carol Coombs, Jane Sherman, Beverly Lessard, Donna Johnston, Roger, Kenneth, Dale Phillips, Nancy Ambrogi, Bonnie Colucci; many great-nieces and great-nephews. She will be fondly remembered by a great-niece, Kristen and her family, Dale, Seth and Dylan Penney; as well as special friends, Cynthia, Robert, Alex, and Jonathan Downs. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor.
