BANGOR – Thomas Nolan Hardy Sr., 84, died Aug. 25, 2006, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Sept. 8, 1921, in Bangor, the son of James Albert and Florence Marie (Nolan) Hardy. Tom was the youngest of four boys. His mother died in 1928, at the age of 48. They were raised by their father and grandmother, Maggie Nolan, who at the time was 73 years old. After graduating from Bangor High School and receiving a post graduate degree from John Bapst High School, Tom joined the Navy June 7, 1942. He served in the South Pacific for three years and was proud to have been a destroyer sailor on the USS Sigsbee, DD 502; the USS Conner, DD 582; and the USS Phelps, DD 360; attaining the rank of fire controlman, 2/C. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal; the American Theatre Ribbon; the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon, nine stars; the Philippines Liberation Ribbon, one star; and the Good Conduct Medal. He later attended Husson College and then went to work for the New England Telephone Co. for 38 years and retired in 1985. Tom will be sadly missed by the Poker Club and all the members of the Oatmeal Club. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, York Street, Bangor, a little league coach for both of his sons, a member of the Telephone Pioneers, the Heart to Heart volunteer program at Eastern Maine Medical Center and the Galen Cole Family Foundation. Some of the highlights of his time with the foundation included a trip to Washington, D.C., to visit the World War II memorial and the opportunity to share World War II experiences with school children from all around the state of Maine. Family time at the summer camp will be especially missed. Tom will remain in the hearts of his wife and family forever. He is survived by the love of his live and best friend, Sally Jameson Hardy; three children, Mary Loyola Moody and David, Thomas Nolan Hardy Jr. and Dawn, and Dr. Louis Hardy and Cynthia; six grandchildren, Sarah Porian, Mariah Moody, Jameson Hardy, Nolan Hardy, Chelsea Hardy and Emma Hardy; several cousins, nieces and nephews. Tom was predeceased by his parents and grandparents; three brothers, James R. Hardy, William K. Hardy and Edward F. Hardy. Friends are invited to visit with the family 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, at St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York St., Bangor, with the Very Rev. Richard McLaughlin, celebrant. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share in conversation and refreshments 1 p.m. at the home of Dr. Louis and Cynthia Hardy, 36 Silver Ridge Road, Veazie.
