MARS HILL- Thomas R. York Jr., 77, died Feb. 6, 2005, at a Presque Isle hospital. He was born Nov. 24, 1927, in Mars Hill the son of Thomas R. Sr. and Dawn (Brown) York. Tom graduated from ACI in 1946, attended Hebron Academy for one year, The University of Maine at Brunswick and later attended the Aroostook School of Commerce. Tom was a well-known potato grower in the area for more than 37 years. His great interest in the potato industry prompted his involvement in several farm-related organizations such as the Aroostook County Farm bureau, of which he was a past president. He was also very interested in the community he lived in and the young people that grew up there. He served on the Mars Hill Town Council and the Board of Directors of S.A.D. No. 42 for several years. He was a member of Aroostook Lodge No. 197 AF & AM Tom loved golfing at the Mars Hill Country Club, where he was a member, hunting, fishing and spending time at his camp on East Grand Lake with family and friends. His 14 grandchildren and four great- grandchildren gave him his greatest joy in life. Surviving him is his wife of more than 55 years, Laurine (Thompson) York of Mars Hill; sons, John T. York and his wife, Betsy, of Mars Hill, Thomas R. York III, and a special son Robert W. York of Mars Hill; daughters, Susan Stevenson and her husband, Ford, of Wayne, Mary Fletcher and her husband, Greg, of Waterville, Jane LaBounty of Spring Hope, N.C., and Joan Carlson and her husband, John, of Mars Hill; his beloved grandchildren, Tyler, Tom, Joe, Jeremy, Liz, Hannah, Ryan, Angela, Ben, Craig, Tim, Logan, Ethan and Wilder; four great-granddaughters, a sister, Phyllis Brownyork of Granite City, Calif. and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, at the East Ridge Union Church in Mars Hill with Pastor Lawrence Beals officiating. Relatives and friends may call at the church from noon until the time of the service. A Masonic committal service will be held later in the spring at Kings Grove Cemetery in Mars Hill. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to the, T.R. York Scholarship fund, care of Betsy York, P.O. Box 417, Mars Hill, ME 04758.
