SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Thomas “Smitty” Charles Smith, 61, died June 12, 2005, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Feb. 6, 1944, in Boston, Mass., the son of Charles S. and Ruth A. (Dickinson) Smith. Tom entered the U.S. Navy in 1963 and served until 1966. He then worked as a Harwich special police officer in Harwich, Mass., and at various other jobs until 1980. He entered the U.S. Coast Guard, where he served until he retired in 1998. After his retirement, Tom worked for several summers at the Acadia National Park Service. He then spent the last four years as a dispatcher for the town of Southwest Harbor. He was a member of the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Harwich Port, Mass. He was a past member of the Masonic Pilgrim Lodge, Harwich, Mass. and past master and current member of the Southwest Harbor/Tremont Masonic Lodge. Tom was a past president and current member of the Southwest Harbor/Tremont Nursing Services and also served as a volunteer ambulance driver. Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 19 years, Cheryl Lea (McDonald) Smith of Southwest Harbor; two sons, Warren C. Smith and wife, Leanne of Mt. Desert and Stephen A. Chipman of Birch Harbor; three daughters, Karen L. Smith of Smyrna, Tenn., Joanne L. Smith of Orleans, Mass. and Lisa M. Young and husband, Jason, of Southwest Harbor; four brothers, Wayne Hurd of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., William Hurd and wife, Claire, of Westbrook, Robert Hurd and wife, Virginia, of Bristol, R.I. and Donald Hurd of Dorchester, Mass.; one sister, Joan McEachern and husband, Howard, of Pembroke, Mass.; and three grandchildren, Katherine L. Smith of Mt. Desert, Shelby J. Young and Serena M. Young, both of Southwest Harbor. The mother of Warren, Karen and Joanne, Pamela J. Perez of Harwich, Mass., also survives. Friends area invited to call 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2005, at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mt. Desert, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday. Interment will be at Mt. Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Tom’s memory may be made to the Southwest Harbor/Tremont Ambulance Fund, P.O.
