PRINCETON – Tristan Newell Leavitt, 66, passed away peacefully to our Lord on Jan. 10, 2004, at a Bangor hospital. He was born June 18, 1937, in New London, Conn., the son of Burton and Marguerite (McKillop) Leavitt. Tristan graduated from Northeastern, Class of 1959, and was commissioned in the Army Signal Corps in July 1959. He served as Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff (G-2) Counter Intelligence in Korea and Military intelligence assigned to the Vietnamese National Police Special Branch in 1969. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Meritorious Achievement, and Army Commendation Medals. Tristan retired as Major (USAR) in 1968. He was an investigator and appeals officer in the U.S. Civil Service Commission, transferring to the U.S. Treasury Dept. and served as the Chief Discrimination Complaint Officer in the Office of the Secretary of Treasury. Tris retired to Princeton with his wife in 1997. His lifelong love of music included service as the Commander of the Russian Student Choir, membership in the Columbia Pro Cantare Choral Group, which performed with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and singing with the Congregational Church Choir. Tris was a Post Commander of the American Legion Post 156 in Howard County, Maryland. He was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason, Lewy’s Island Lodge No. 138. Tristan was honored to be selected by his brethren to serve as Master of the Lodge in 2004. He was also active in the Grange in Princeton, and the Princeton Congregational Church. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; son, Eric Gray of Gaithersburg, Md.; sister, Barbara Mitchell and her husband, John McGurk, of Lynn, Mass.; nephew, David Mitchell and his wife, Lyn; grandniece and grandnephew, Marissa and Matthew; sisters-in-law, Frances Barry and her husband, John Barry, and Mary Etta Boesl; and nephew, Peter Boesl Cook. He was predeceased by his mother and father. Friends are invited to call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the Scott-Wilson Funeral Home, Calais, where a Masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at the Princeton Congregational Church, with the Rev. Dana Kadey officiating.
