BANGOR – Vaughn Atlee Stevens, 87, peacefully passed on to his Heavenly Lord March 18, 2005, surrounded by his beloved family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was born Sept. 1, 1917, in Carmel, the son of Arthur and Edythe (Curtis) Stevens. He attended schools in Carmel; graduated from Bangor High School in 1936 and later attended Husson College. He served in the U.S. Army in England during World War II. Like other members of the greatest generation, his sacrifice was great; his parents both perished while he was in Europe and his son, Winfred, was two years old before he finally met his father. After his service in the war, Vaughn worked for the Standard Shoe Store for more than 31 years. He was a member of the Rising Virtue Lodge No. 10 AF & AM, Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Bangor, Maine Consistory 32 degree, John R. Chase Chapter O.E.S. No. 129 of Carmel, and American Legion Post No. 2 in Bristol, Conn. Vaughn had a wonderful life. He spent his retirement years with his wife of 63 years, Mittie (Downs) Stevens of Bangor in Florida before returning to Maine two years ago. Together they traveled the country, tended his flower garden and spent precious time with their family. During his retirement years in Florida, he volunteered daily as a teacher’s aid to Mittie, a teacher of 48 years, and was a mentor and friend to the special education children in her classroom. Mittie recalls that in his younger days Vaughn was a “dancing fool.” He is survived by his wife, his son, Winfred Stevens and his wife, Pat, of Bangor; their three daughters, Kathleen Stevens Walker and her husband, David, of Orono; Amy Stevens Brook, her husband, Chris and their two boys, Benjamin and Andrew, of Cumberland; Sara Rose Stevens of Bangor; his daughter, Nellie Vonn Stevens Page and her husband, David, of Bristol, Conn.; their two children, Amber Elizabeth Page and Kyle Lewis Page, both of Bristol, Conn. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, who he loved like as sister, Louise MacLeod Rabbitt; and many special nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by his constant canine companion and friend, Bounce. Vaughn was predeceased by his granddaughter, Heather Marie Page; and his brother-in-law, Paul MacLeod Sr. Friends may call 6-7 p.m. Monday, March 21, at Brookings Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a Masonic service will be held 6:45 p.m. by the officers and members of Rising Virtue Lodge No. 10 AF & AM. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, at First Baptist Church, 56 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Stephanie Salinas, Pastor, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the church vestry immediately following the service.
