MILLINOCKET – Vaughn R. Martin, 78, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, at a Bangor hospital. He was born June 23, 1928, in Fort Fairfield, the son of Wilfred P. and Adelle M. (Levesque) Martin. Vaughn was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a graduate of Searsport High School and the University of Maine – Orono, where he received his master’s degree in education. Vaughn began his career in public education, teaching and coaching at Milo High School. He then went on to become the guidance counselor at Piscataquis County High School, Guilford, where he was also a Boy Scout leader, and then served as principal at Millinocket Middle School for 22 years, retiring in 1985. Vaughn enjoyed an active retirement, woodworking, gardening and was especially proud of his apple trees. He also stayed active by participating in golfing, fishing, hunting and cross-country skiing. Vaughn volunteered his time for several local organizations, including the Katahdin Area Support Group, 55 Alive, Meals on Wheels and The R.S.V.P. He was a communicant of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Millinocket, where he was also a Eucharistic minister and member of the church choir. Vaughn also sang with and was a member of “The Has Beens” in Millinocket. Vaughn, a loving husband, father and grandfather is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lorna E. (Sambrook) Martin of Millinocket; seven children, Scott and Mary Jane Martin of Strong, Teresa and Jim England of Dedham, Mike and Jan Martin of Patten, Tina and Randy Place of Morrill, Michele Martin and friend, Jim, of Springvale, Mary and Pete MacDonald of Auburn and Charles “Chuck” and Ann Martin of Merrimac, N.H.; a brother, Kenneth Martin of Lisbon Falls; two sisters, Gail Martin of Searsport and Glenna Martin of Bangor; 13 grandchildren, Ryan and Sara Martin, Paul and James England, Mark and Michelle Martin, Brandi Jo, Belinda, Blaine Place, Danielle and Matthew MacDonald, Andrew Joseph and Samantha Martin and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two sons, Daniel Martin and Peter Martin; a brother, Maurice Martin; and two grandchildren, Brooke Place and Matthew Martin. Friends are invited to visit with the family 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Bouchard-Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket, where the Little Flower Circle of the Daughters of Isabella will say a rosary service 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 112 Maine Ave., Millinocket.
