PRESQUE ISLE – Vaughn Tweedie Allen, 85, died Nov. 5, 2005, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Caribou. He was the son of Clarence Leo and Faye Tweedie Allen. Vaughn grew up in Westfield, where his parents owned a farm, attending grade school there and commuting by train to Presque Isle to attend and graduate high school. Those years were spent boarding in Presque Isle from Monday through Friday. There at PIHS he developed a lifelong interest in sports. Then he attended Madawaska Training School for two years with the aim to teach. When World War II intervened he enlisted in the Army-Air Force and trained as bombardier. He logged 900 flying, 300 hours of that in combat. He was awarded several medals, The Air Medal with Five Oak Leaf Clusters, Croix de Guerre, a Distinguished Unit Citation and the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon. He flew in the Mediterranean Theatre, Naples Foggia, Rome Arno and southern France. He flew 65 combat missions. Arriving home he joined the reserves, serving for 20 years and retiring with the rank of major. At home in Westfield he worked on the farm, later moving to Presque Isle, to work at the Presque Isle Air Base, and to marry Joan Stevens Allen in 1947. Through the years he also worked at H.B. Green, D.A. Stevens clothing store and Eastern States Farmers Exchange (Agway Inc.) for 20 years. In those years, he worked a camp at Shin Pond in Patten where he enjoyed life there, salmon fishing. He loved golfing, bowling, playing poker and cribbage, which he continued throughout his life. Vaughn also enjoyed attending the horse races. He was also a member of the American Legion – Ray Golding Post. He was predeceased by his father and mother; two brothers, Arthur and Maurice; and a special nephew, Keith D. Allen Jr. Surviving him are his wife, Joan; and their three sons, William Otis and his wife, Darris (Brewer) Allen, Joel Stevens Allen and Von Stevens Allen. Vaughn had three grandchildren, Lindsay Rae (Allen) Allen and her husband, David, Derrick Lucas Allen and his wife, Amy (Bowler) Allen and Katherine Elizabeth Allen. He also had two great-grandsons, Nathaniel David Allen and Noah Alexander Allen. Surviving also are his brother, Keith and his wife, Geneva; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas L. Blackstone presiding.
