ORONO – Vaun J. Phillips, 103, died Dec. 7, 2006, at the home of Doris Phillips, in Hermon. She was born March 2, 1903, in Danforth, the daughter of Ewen and Ellen “Nellie” (Pinkerton) Jenkins. She and her husband, E. Merle Phillips, were married July 30, 1924, in Danforth, and made their home in Orono, where they enjoyed many years of happiness with family and friends. Upon his death, February 1978, the organizations to which they had belonged and her family became an important part of her life. Vaun was a member of the Orono United Methodist Chu-rch, Knyvetta Rebekah Lodge, Searsport, and previously a member of the Star of Hope Rebekah Lodge No. 117, Orono, during which time she filled many offices. She was a past district deputy of District No. 21. She was also a member of the Riverside Grange No. 273, North Brewer and Penobscot Pomona No. 8. She served as a pianist for the organizations for a period of 40 years. She was honored with the presentation of the Boston Post Cane, Dec. 11, 2001, as the oldest citizen of Orono. She is survived by her nephew, Philip Gilpatrick of Florida; two nieces, Patricia Fitzgerald of Orono and Diana Moore and her husband, Tim, of Connecticut; her sister-in-law, Doris Phillips of Hermon and her family, as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews. A memorial service will be celebrated 3 p.m. Friday, June 22, at Brookings-Smith, LaBeau Chapel, 72 Main St., Orono, with the Rev. Clayton Blackstone officiating. Friends may call 2 p.m. until the time of service. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Orono.
