HERMON – Velma G. Smart, 83, passed away in a Bangor nursing home Saturday, June 11, 2005, one day short of her 68th wedding anniversary. Velma was born Dec. 25, 1921, in Bangor, the daughter of the late Joseph and Lillian (Holbrook) Burke of Plymouth. She attended school in Plymouth and moved to Hermon with her husband in 1946 where she lived, in the farmhouse she loved, for 57 years. Velma was an active member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Hermon and had many special friends and neighbors. She enjoyed spending time with family, going for rides, and cooking. She was famous for her custard pie that many enjoyed, some in lieu of a birthday cake. Velma was predeceased by her loving husband of 51 years, Jairus A. Smart; twin sons, “the Smart twins”, Deane and Eugene Smart; three brothers, Harland, Darrell, and Clifton Burke; and many special friends, all of whom she greatly loved and missed. She is survived by her oldest son, Wayland F. Smart and his wife, Rena, of Carmel; and by her daughter, Sharon and her husband, Clinton Ward Jr., of Hermon. She is also survived by several very special grandchildren; many great- grandchildren; and three great- great-grandchildren; a dear sister, Mrs. Dudley (Dorene) Curry of Newport; nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends and relatives are invited to call 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, at Brookings-Smith Funeral Home, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, at Brookings-Smith, with graveside services to follow at the Pine Tree Cemetery on the Pine Tree Road in Hermon.
