NEW SWEDEN – Velma L. Anderson, 83, died March 26, 2004, at a Lewiston healthcare facility after a long illness. She was born Feb. 9, 1921, in New Sweden, the daughter of Carl and Anna Anderson. She was a confirmed member of Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church in New Sweden. Velma lived in New Sweden until 2001, when she moved to Schooner Retirement Community in Auburn. Throughout her life she lovingly supported many immediate and extended family members. Having a very special love for children, she was rewarded by their affection and attention through several generations. Always a self-sufficient woman, she participated in tending the family farm and worked diligently at various jobs including positions at Maine Potato Bag Co. and Cary Memorial Hospital. She was employed for more than 25 years at the By-Lo IGA as a meat-cutter and retired in 1985. One of her favorite hobbies was taking photographs of family activities and enlarging and coloring them using home equipment. Velma is survived by one sister, Phyllis Hanson of New Sweden; and many nieces and nephews extending to several generations. She tenderly touched all of their lives as children and as adults. Through the years she filled the role of parent and grandparent, and will be greatly missed by her niece, Judy Caldwell; and great-nieces, Nedra Fabito and Lara Savelson along with their families from Carlesbad, Calif., and Highland, N.Y., respectively. Velma was a valued, helpful family member to all of Carl and Anna’s descendants. Family and friends may call 6-8 p.m. Monday, March 29, at the Lancaster Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover St., Caribou. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Peter G. Drever Jr. officiating. Spring interment will be at the New Sweden Cemetery, New Sweden. Following the funeral service all are invited for a time of coffee and fellowship at Svea Hall at the Gustaf Adolf Lutheran Church, New Sweden.
