HARRINGTON – Verna S. Dowling, wife of Elbridge “Prid” Dowling, journeyed from this life to her eternal home Thursday, May 15, 2008, at Sunrise Care Facility, Jonesport. She was born June 11, 1925, the daughter of Harry and Eva (Mitchell) Stevens Sr. Verna and her twin sister, Vena, graduated as co-salutatorians from Harrington High School in 1942. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grand-mother and counted time spent with family her greatest joy. After raising her family, Verna worked at Tracy’s Restaurant, Cherryfield, SAD No. 37 as a baker and pastry chef, and the last 13 years of her employment she worked as a teller for Union Trust Bank, Cherryfield. She was an active member of Harrington United Methodist Church and most recently, Faith UMC of Columbia. She was a member of Wescogus Chapter of the Eastern Star, Addison. She will be lovingly remembered for her caring and compassionate ways, her love of and skill in baking and her “dish of ice cream and half a cookie.” She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 63 years, Prid, her soul mate who cared for her during her struggles with Alzheimer’s; her daughter, Hazel and husband, Bernie Hammond, of Baileyville; her son, Jamie and wife, Kathy Dowling, of Harrington; three grandchildren, Sherri and husband, Paul Cox, of Dennysville, Terry and husband, Allan Fitzhenry, of Cutler and Thomas and wife, Tina Dowling, of Newburgh; five great-granddaughters, Amy Cox, Emma and Abby Fitzhenry, and Ava and Addison Dowling; and a special and gracious friend to the family, Kathy Stanwood of Addison. Verna was predeceased by her brother, Harry Stevens Jr.; and her lifelong companion and best friend, her twin sister, Vena and husband, Everard Farren. Verna’s family would like to express deepest appreciation to all the caregivers at Sunrise Care Facility for the compassion shown to Mom and to us and to Down East Hospice for providing loving support for us as well as Mom. A time of remembrance will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at Faith United Methodist Church, Columbia, with Pastor Steve Smith officiating.
