PERRY – Verna S. Newcomb, 79, beloved wife of John Newcomb, went to be with the Lord July 14, 2006. She was born April 20, 1927, in Pembroke, the daughter of Earl and Clara Sturks. Verna was an active member of numerous Perry organizations, including the Congregational Church and the Women’s Fellowship; the Girl Scouts, which she helped to get started and lead; the Perry Improvement Association, helping with the town’s 150th birthday party; the Sunrise Squares square dance club; and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Perry Volunteer Fire Department. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, John R. Newcomb of Perry; her daughter, Deborah; her son, Gregory and his wife, Louise, of Perry; four grandchildren, William and his wife, Kathy, Ivy and her husband, John Turner, Anne and her husband, Nicholas Bitar, of Perry and John and his wife, Erin, of Eastport; six great-grandchildren, Madilyn and Ashlyn Newcomb of Eastport, Elizabeth, Katie and Charles Bitar and J.D. Turner, all of Perry; two sisters, Mary Stevens and Yvonne Carter of Pembroke; two brothers, William Sturks of Calais and Dale and his wife, Jane Sturks, of Oakland; a special brother-in-law, Robert Green of Oakland; a special sister-in-law, Yvonne Newcomb of Perry; several nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held 6 p.m. Friday, July 21, at Mays Funeral Home – Flagg Chapel, 72 High St., Eastport, with Pastors Ronald and Colin Windhorst officiating.
