MASARDIS – Vernon C. Junkins, 85, died Friday, May 2, 2008, with his family present, at his home. He was born July 8, 1922, in Masardis, the son of Herman and Levine Searway Junkins. Vernon was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps and was also a member of Ashland VFW. Vernon worked as a machine operator for the B&A Railroad, until his retirement, June 6, 1985. He then spent many enjoyable years helping his son-in-law, Peter, with his carpentry business. Vernon loved boating and picking fiddleheads. He was an avid vegetable gardener, and loved planning and planting with his dear neighbor and friend, Jon. He had a great sense of humor and loved telling stories. Vernon was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy; his daughter, Patricia Poitraw; and his sister, Vera Smith. He is survived by three children, Dawn and husband, Peter, of Masardis, Jacqueline of Houlton, and Debra Helmick of North Dakota; his sister, Leone and her husband, Louis Kern, of Massachusetts; 10 grandchildren, Kelly, Kimberly, Peter, Jamie, Angel, Shawn, Shelley, Ry, Chanel and Shamara; several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m. May 31 at Masardis Cemetery.
