MARS HILL – Victor H. Giberson Sr., 88, died Nov. 16, 2005, at a Bangor hospital. He was born March 3, 1917, in Mars Hill, the son of Allie B. and Viola (Gillespie) Giberson. Victor grew up in the Mars Hill area and obtained his private pilots license in February of 1940. He went on to use his skills as a pilot during World War II when he joined the Glider Pilot Program, June 24, 1942. Victor served with the 304th T.C.S. and participated in battles in the Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe, South France, Normandy, North France, Rome-Arno. His brave service to his country earned him the Air Medal with one Oak Leak Cluster, EAME Theater Ribbon with seven Bronze Stars, one Bronze Arrowhead, and the Holland Orange Lanyard which is the highest award in the Netherlands. After his discharge he returned to Mars Hill and along with his wife Vella Dawn raised their family. Victor worked for many years as an Air Traffic Controller with his last position being in Millinocket. Victor loved his camp out at East Plantation as well as hunting and fishing. He also was a flight instructor, started the Mars Hill Airfield, was a member and past state commander of the National World War II Glider Pilots Association, and was a member of the William Cousins American Legion Post No. 118. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Vella Dawn (Rideout) Giberson of Mars Hill; children, Wanece Lambert of Bangor, Donna Lee Tilley of Mars Hill, Victor H. Giberson Jr. and his wife, Sandy, of Blaine, Wayne Giberson of Mars Hill and Blaine Giberson of Florida; 14 grandchildren whom he loved very much; 16 great-grand-children, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Victor was predeceased by three sons, Daniel, Edward and Keith; a brother, Robert J. Giberson; and four sisters, Virginia Tapley, Beulah Libby, Della MacDonald and Kate Varney. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, at the King’s Grove Cemetery with Pastor Lawrence Beals officiating. A military committal will follow.
