FORT FAIRFIELD – Vinal E. “Red” Russell, 81, husband of the late Marie (Nichols) Russell, died Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at a Presque Isle healthcare facility, after a brief illness. He was born Feb. 12, 1923, at Fort Fairfield, the son of John L. and Sadie (Pelkey) Russell. He was a graduate of Fort Fairfield High School and was married to Marie Nichols on April 3, 1945. Red owned and operated Russell’s Restaurant for several years and had also been employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier. He was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998 and was a member of the United Parish Church, Fort Fairfield, the Aroostook Valley Country Club, Fort Fairfield, the Fort Fairfield Lions Club, the U.S. Postal Union and the former Fort Fairfield Masonic Lodge AF & AM. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his daughter, Mary E. Young; one brother, Frank Russell; one sister, Norma Hockenhull. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, John and Carol Ann Russell of Fort Fairfield; one sister, Roma Higgins of Fort Fairfield; three grandchildren, Sean Russell of Manchester, N.H.; Scott Young of Livermore, Lea Young, currently stationed in Arkansas; nieces and nephews, Jean Hall, Peter and Robert Higgins, Sadie Hochenhull, Josephine McGillian, Donald Dow Jr., Philip Gulliver and Lena Estes. Friends may call Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, from 7-9 p.m. at the Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at the United Parish Church, 4 Church St., Fort Fairfield, with the Rev. Diane Langworthy officiating. Interment will follow at the Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of fellowship with refreshments will be held at the United Parish Church, Fort Fairfield, immediately following the interment service.
