CALAIS – Viola B. Gibson, 92, died Saturday, May 26, 2007, at Calais Regional Hospital. Viola was born Jan. 8, 1915, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada, daughter of the late Leverett and Jennie (Norton) Russell. In 1935, she married William G. Gibson. Viola was past chairwoman of the Democratic City Committee, Calais and past president of the Happy Gang. She was appointed by the governor to serve on the Maine Committee of Aging, and also served on the advisory committee on senior housing in Calais, and the advisory committee on low income fam-ilies throughout Washington County. Viola enjoyed camping, traveling, seek-a-words, helping her fellow senior citizens and was an avid reader. She was predeceased by her husband, William in 1975; one sister, seven brothers and one half brother. Surviving are three sons, William Gibson and wife, Barbara, Phillip Gibson and companion, Barbara McLean and James Gibson and wife, Debbie, all of Calais; five sisters-in-law, Verna Mac-kechnie, Hilda Kierstead, Irene Russell, Eleanor Russell and Nellie Russell; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Calais Cemetery with Pastor Dana Kadey officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Viola’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
