LEE – Viola Frances (West) Maxwell, 102, died Oct. 9, 2005, at a Lincoln healthcare facility. She was born Oct. 26, 1902, in Holden, the daughter of Robert Jefferson West and Maud Mason (Hart) West. She had a sister, Alice (West) Harriman and a brother, Robert N. West, both now deceased. During her early years, she traveled across the bridge with horse and carriage to Bangor High School and graduated in 1921. In 1926, she graduated from Eastern State Normal School in Castine to become a schoolteacher. She taught school for several years. She married Verdal T. Maxwell, Aug. 4, 1932 and they moved to Lee. Viola was active in the Lee Grange for many years and was a member of the United Baptist Church of Lee. She loved to travel, going to Europe in 1967, then to Alaska. By her picture in her yearbook was written, “She may be sedate and appear that way; Most people think she is, but once you know her you change your mind, never to turn it back again!” And she lived her whole life with that determination! Surviving are two sons and their wives, Maynard and Cheryl Maxwell of Lee and Colby and Janette Maxwell of Lincoln; five grandsons and their wives, Kevin and Ginger Maxwell and Scott Maxwell of Lee, Keith and Kathy Maxwell of Wichita Falls, Texas, Derek and Melanie Maxwell of Lincoln and Andrew and Sonia Maxwell of Lee; 11 great-grandchildren, Morgan, Abigail, Taryn, Alexys, Alyssa, Devon, Jordan, Harli, Gunner, Mallory and Mason. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Rd., Lincoln. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Woodlawn Cemetery with the Rev. Darrell Joiner officiating.
