STONINGTON – Viola K. Barter, 92, died March 4, 2008, at a Deer Isle health care facility. She was born July 16, 1915, in Stonington, daughter of John and Stella (Carter) Knowlton. Viola is survived by one daughter, Rebecca Beatrice and her husband, Jerome, of Deer Isle; one sister, Muriel Snow of Greenfield, Mass.; also a niece, who was like a sister to her, May Gilmore of Corinna; and many other nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Fred A. Barter; brothers, Everett Knowlton, Tilden Knowlton, Merrill Knowlton and Wallace “Pete” Knowlton; and sisters, Ethna Knowlton, Louisa Conley, Margaret Eaton, Clara Jones, Edith Smith and Evelyn Jones. A funeral service will be celebrated 1 p.m. Friday, March 7, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 9 Thurlow’s Hill Road, Stonington, with Elder A. Dowe Eaton officiating. Friends may call noon until time of service. Interment will be at Knowlton Cemetery, Stonington.
