SKOWHEGAN – Virene DeBeck, 75, born Jan. 2, 1932, passed peacefully from this life Oct. 12, 2007, surrounded with love by her family after a long courageous battle with cancer at the home of her son, Michael DeBeck in Dover, N.H. Virene was the daughter of Edwin and Muriel Booth. She was born and raised in Newport. She graduated valedictorian from Newport High School in 1950. She married Albert “Ike” DeBeck, May 17, 1953. She worked as an employee for T.W. Grants, Friends and Friends car dealership and at Central Maine Power, CMP, retiring from CMP in 1989. She was a den mother for Pack No. 484 in the 1960s. Virene and her husband, Ike, owned a camp on Lake Sebasticook, where they spent many summers enjoying the company of friends and relatives. She did a variety of volunteer work for The Federated Church, Skowhegan. The thing she enjoyed most was making Easter and Christmas baskets of any type for the shut-ins and delivering them. She loved spending time with family, doing quilting, crocheting, knitting and going to sewing classes. She also enjoyed visiting, going for walks, out to lunch, playing bridge and bowling with all her friends. Virene will be missed for her quiet, gentle, generous and energetic spirit by those who knew and loved her so very, very much. She is survived by her son, Kevin DeBeck of Bangor; her son, Michael DeBeck of Dover, N.H.; daughter-in-law, Debbie DeBeck; granddaughters, Eliza-beth DeBeck of Dover, N.H., and Valerie and her husband, John Silvia, of Georgetown, Mass. She also leaves behind other beloved “grandchildren,” Dayna, Tracy and Tim. She is survived by her brother, Bill and his wife, Natalie, of Pittsfield; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Booth of Palmyra, Gloria DeBeck of Pittsfield and Frances Cookson of Newport, all of whom she loved dearly. Also included in her family are nieces and nephews, Sue McKenney, Jane Ferland, Paul Booth, Brenda O’Brien, Ron Cookson, Cathy Franzoni, Susie Cole, Joanne Cookson, Donna Brasier, Steve DeBeck, Greg DeBeck, Missy Noonan, William Booth Jr., Terry Booth, Steven Booth, Scott Booth, Mark Booth, Peter Booth and all their spouses and children, whom she loved and enjoyed hearing about from Maine, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert DeBeck; her 19 year partner, James Joseph; sisters, Marie and Dolly; brother, Gerald and her parents. Visiting hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at Smart and Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at The Federated Church, Island Avenue, Skowhegan. A reception will be held immediately after the service in the church hall. Committal service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at Riverside Cemetery, Newport. Memorial contributions can be made to any Hospice organization, animal shelter of your choice or to The Federated Church, P.O. Box 504, Skowhegan, ME 04976, where she was a member for more than 40 years.
